HNLMS Amsterdam

The design of HNLMS Amsterdam has been a joint effort of the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Spanish Navy. The ship was laid down on the 21st of May 1992 and was named on the 11th of September 1993 by Mrs. M.L. Kok-Roukema (the spouse of the former vice-prime minister). Nearly two years later on the 2nd of September 1995 the ship was transferred to the Royal Netherlands Navy and commissioned for the first time. The ‘sistership’ SPS Patiño was built and commissioned in Spain around the same time.

The crest of HNLMS Amsterdam is derived from the crest of the city of Amsterdam. The motto reads: “HEROIC RESOLUTE MERCIFUL”. Queen Wilhelmina granted this motto in 1946 to the city of Amsterdam due to merit during World War II.

HNLMS Amsterdam is a so called ‘Fast Combat Support Ship’ designed to simultaneously transfer fuel and solids such as food, ammunition, personnel and spare parts. The ship is capable of replenishing a maximum of three warships at the same time.
